The Mental Health Benefits Of Spiritualism, Regardless ... - Kiefit.com

Despite differences in rituals and beliefs among the world's major religions, spirituality often enhances health regardless of a person's faith, according to University of Missouri researchers. The MU researchers believe that health care providers could take advantage of this correlation between health - particularly mental health - and spirituality by tailoring treatments and rehabilitation programs to accommodate an individual's spiritual inclinations...

Bahrain court acquits protest leader of Twitter insult

A Bahrain appeals court on Thursday overturned the conviction of a rights activist over a tweet involving the prime minister, his lawyer said, but he remained in jail for other offenses.

Bahrain, where the U.S. Fifth Fleet is based as a bulwark against Iran and any threats to Gulf oil shipping, has been in turmoil for 18 months with majority Shi'ite Muslims agitating for democratic reforms in the Sunni-ruled kingdom.

Nabeel Rajab, founder of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, was sentenced in July to three months in prison for suggesting via Twitter that residents of al-Muharraq district had made a show of support for Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the prime minister, only for financial gain.

"The judge ruled his innocence. Nabeel and representatives of many foreign embassies were present. I was able to meet him for a few minutes," lawyer Mohammed al-Jishi told Reuters.

The state news agency BNA said the judge had acquitted Rajab because he was not satisfied with the evidence put forward.

Rajab has led many demonstrations calling for a reduction in the powers of the Al Khalifa dynasty which has long ruled the Gulf Arab state. Analysts see the prime minister as a pillar of resistance to opposition demands.

A hero to protesters but a villain for those who fear unrest could bring Shi'ite Islamists to power, Rajab was sentenced to three years in prison last week on three charges of leading demonstrations. Prosecutors said Rajab had incited violence against police.

Rights groups and Western governments have criticized that conviction and the appeals court is due to examine it on Sept. 10.

"The verdict (on Thursday) was an easy way out for the authorities after handing Rajab a three-year jail sentence last week," said Brian Dooley of U.S.-based Human Rights First.

"They admit their mistake in convicting him for the tweet, but he still goes back to prison."

Rajab's opponents predicted that Rajab would be freed in the protest cases because of pressure from the United States. "An order declaring his innocence is coming from the U.S. embassy," wrote Sunni cleric Mohammed Khalid on Twitter.

Shi'ite-led unrest has persisted since a period of martial law last year that put down the uprising. The two sides accuse each other of responsibility for almost daily street violence.

Opposition parties led by the Shi'ite group Wefaq are demanding full powers for the elected parliament to legislate and form governments. Many Shi'ites complain of political and economic marginalization, a charge the government denies.

In response to the unrest, the Al Khalifas have increased parliament's powers of scrutiny over ministers and say policing is being revamped to conform with international standards.

The United States has pushed Bahrain's rulers to resolve the conflict through talks, but it values close relations with the ruling family that allows the U.S. Fifth Fleet to run its operations out of a Manama base.

Bahrain has been caught in a regional competition for dominance between Iran and U.S.-backed Saudi Arabia. Riyadh sent troops to shore up the Bahrain government last year, and Iran has championed the opposition cause while denying accusations it is orchestrating the unrest.

Fifth Fleet warships help ensure oil exports flow freely out of the Gulf. Iran has threatened a blockade if its protracted stand-off with Western powers over its disputed nuclear program degenerates into conflict.

General Notes Taliban Coercion in Some Attacks on Troops in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON ? The senior commander in Afghanistan made new allowances on Thursday that Taliban influence could play a large role in attacks by Afghan security forces on Americans, saying that up to one-quarter of the killings could be caused by Taliban infiltration or coercion. But he reiterated that most of such insider attacks have still been attributed to personal grievances and animosities.

The commander, Gen. John R. Allen of the Marine Corps, addressed the subject in a video news conference on Thursday, a day after Afghan officials blamed foreign intelligence services for being behind most of the insider killings. He said he had not seen the information that prompted that claim, but sought to clarify what NATO commanders knew about why Afghan forces have taken to killing their American colleagues in increasing numbers.

Previously, NATO military officials had said that only about 10 percent of the insider attacks could be attributed to Taliban infiltration or impersonation of Afghan security units. But on Thursday, General Allen said that in addition to that infiltration figure, another roughly 15 percent of the attacks could be caused by Taliban coercion of soldiers or police officers, either directly or through family members.

Because most of the attackers had been killed or had escaped, and not captured alive for interrogation, it was difficult to provide firm statistics, he said. He also noted that more Afghans than Western troops had been killed by such insider attacks.

Such attacks have raised concerns about the mission to train Afghan forces in order to hand over security control to them by the 2014 Western troop withdrawal deadline. But General Allen insisted that the international coalition remained committed to the strategy of working with the Afghans as trainers and advisers despite the intensified insider attacks.

?At this particular moment, I don?t believe that we need to contemplate reducing our contact with the Afghans,? General Allen said. ?The closer the relationship with them ? indeed the more we can foster a relationship of brotherhood ? the more secure we are.?

Even so, he said American and allied troops had to be ?more watchful.?

At least 40 NATO service members have been reported killed by insider attacks this year, already more than last year?s total, and with at least 9 of the deaths coming over the past two weeks. General Allen said that the pressure of fighting through the Ramadan fasting season might be partially responsible for the recent surge.

The day before, President Hamid Karzai?s office asserted for the first time that Afghan officials believed that foreign spy agencies were behind most of the attacks, putting it directly at odds with NATO?s assessment of the crisis.

After a special meeting of the president?s security advisers, Mr. Karzai?s spokesman, Aimal Faizi, said the Afghan authorities were studying every known insider attack, also known as green-on-blue attacks. He said that based on interrogations of attackers who had been detained, and other evidence like letters and records of phone calls, the government had concluded that the main culprits in the killings had been put in place by intelligence services from neighboring countries. He did not name them, but the government frequently accuses Pakistan and Iran of meddling.

In his news conference on Thursday, General Allen said: ?I?m looking forward to Afghanistan providing us with the intelligence that permits them to come to that conclusion.?

He said that military inquiries had determined that most of the ?green on blue? attacks stemmed from ?disagreements and animosities? as well as ?personal grievance, social difficulties.?

Despite the spike in attacks on allied forces by Afghan security personnel, General Allen said ?it?s been a highly successful summer.? Coalition and Afghan forces, he said, had keep up ?unrelenting pressure? on insurgents ? although the insurgency remains ?dangerous and capable of inflicting harm.?

Two evenings ago, my husband received a call from my step-daughter.? She has been dating her boyfriend for almost 3 years.? He is currently stationed stateside as a member of the military.? In October, he will be deploying to an overseas location.? As a result, they have decided they want to get married before he leaves.? So, our daughter will be getting married on September 1!? They are going to have a small ceremony now, and then have a more elaborate "wedding" upon his return.? I'm nervous that second wedding will never happen as once you are married and settled into your life, it is hard to think about using time, energy or resources on another ceremony.? They will be married in her fiance's parents backyard by a notary.? This is all really disappointing to me as I dreamed of a church wedding, with flowers and beautiful dresses, and her father walking her down the aisle.? As you know, my husband just had knee surgery, so walking is certainly going to be interesting to say the least.? Even more difficult, is the fact I really am not able to express my opinion on the matter.? A and her father were going through a very rough spout about a year ago, however, she and I were getting along very well.? I went to bat for my husband and called A out on some things.? I asked her to consider all her Dad has done for her, sacrifices he has made, etc.? She became angry with me for attempting to give her counsel, and of course, she and her father made up, and I have been a bit of the odd man out since then.? This is why I tell step-mamas to stay out of the relationships between their spouse and his children.? They will eventually mend fences, but the things you said will not be as easily forgiven since you are not the "real parent".? I should have taken my own advice in this circumstance.? Anyway..I digress....if things were as good as they had been in the past, I would just tell A how I felt and encourage her to add at least some spiritual aspect to her wedding, or think about how to make it a bit of a formal occasion.? Alas, however, I am not the "real" mom, and I have been told unequivocally not to offer my thoughts.? Ah, the catch 22 of being a step-parent.? You are expected to offer physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial support without question, or you are favoring your bio children.??? When a major life event such as marriage happens, however, you are treated like a guest and allowed no opinion.? You are told, "she has a mom, and this is their special day", or even less tactfully, "you just need to mind your own business".? Intellectually, I understand this is a day for A and her mom, however, when you have taken a child on vacations, to the doctor, to the hairstylist, to the dentist, sat through school meetings when Mom wasn't interested in attending, shopped for Homecoming Dresses, sent them off to school dances, paid for cell phones and car insurance, bought them a car, paid for their medical insurance..(this list could go on for days), but suddenly on the biggest day of their life, your input is not required.? It's a tough pill to swallow, friends, and something a prospective step-parent must consider before taking on this role.?? I am thankful I have a bio daughter to share this with one day.? I am really trying to keep that in mind.? On the other hand, I love A like my own child, and most of our marriage, she lived with us almost full time.? To feel I am basically an outsider is a bit devastating, honestly.? I am going to keep my mouth shut, use my blog as my place to sort out emotions, and try to just enjoy the day.? I really wish them the brightest of futures, and really appreciate your prayers for her fiance's protection as he heads overseas.? Also, please pray for my step-mama heart. I am hurt and resentful right now.? Just being real.? Thank you for lifting me up in prayer as well. ? Promise I will take lots of pictures of their ceremony to share.? Do any of my wonderful readers have ideas about to include a step-parent into your wedding planning without offending a bio parent?? I would love to hear great ideas or strategies other families have used when faced with how to include everyone.? My great friend was kind enough to take pictures of A and her fiance a couple of years ago.? Here is one of my favorites:
One more picture enjoying the lake at my parent's house.? They really are a lovely couple and I know they will enjoy marriage.

Last one, I promise.? This is my little Strawberry Shake and A's fiance.? As you can see, Strawberry think he is pretty great as well!

Artificial intelligence helps detect subtle differences in mutant worms

Monday, August 20, 2012

Research into the genetic factors behind certain disease mechanisms, illness progression and response to new drugs is frequently carried out using tiny multi-cellular animals such as nematodes, fruit flies or zebra fish.

Often, progress relies on the microscopic visual examination of many individual animals to detect mutants worthy of further study.

Now, scientists have demonstrated an automated system that uses artificial intelligence and cutting-edge image processing to rapidly examine large numbers of individual Caenorhabditis elegans, a species of nematode widely used in biological research. Beyond replacing existing manual examination steps using microfluidics and automated hardware, the system's ability to detect subtle differences from worm-to-worm ? without human intervention ? can identify genetic mutations that might not have been detected otherwise.

By allowing thousands of worms to be examined autonomously in a fraction of the time required for conventional manual screening, the technique could change the way that high throughput genetic screening is carried out using C. elegans.

Details of the research were scheduled to be reported August 19th in the advance online publication of the journal Nature Methods. The research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

"While humans are very good at pattern recognition, computers are much better than humans at detecting subtle differences, such as small changes in the location of dots or slight variations in the brightness of an image," said Hang Lu, the project's lead researcher and an associate professor in the School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. "This technique found differences that would have been almost impossible to pick out by hand."

Lu's research team is studying genes that affect the formation and development of synapses in the worms, work that could have implications for understanding human brain development. The researchers use a model in which synapses of specific neurons are labeled by a fluorescent protein. Their research involves creating mutations in the genomes of thousands of worms and examining the resulting changes in the synapses. Mutant worms identified in this way are studied further to help understand what genes may have caused the changes in the synapses.

One aspect the researchers are studying is why synapses form in the wrong locations, or are of the wrong sizes or types. The differences between the mutants and the normal or "wild type" worms indicate inappropriate developmental patterns caused by the genetic mutations.

Because of the large number of possible genes involved in these developmental processes, the researchers must examine thousands of worms ? perhaps as many as 100,000 ? to exhaust the search. Lu and her research group had earlier developed a microfluidic "worm sorter" that speeds up the process of examining worms under a microscope, but until now, there were two options for detecting the mutants: a human had to look at each animal, or a simple heuristic algorithm was used to make the sorting decision. Neither option is objective or adaptable to new problems.

Lu's system, an optimized version of earlier work by her group, uses a camera to record three-dimensional images of each worm as it passes through the sorter. The system compares each image set against what it has been taught the "wild type" worms should look like. Worms that are even subtly different from normal can be sorted out for further study.

"We feed the program wild-type images, and it teaches itself to recognize what differentiates the wild type. It uses this information to determine what a mutant type may look like ? which is information we didn't provide to the system ? and sorts the worms based on that," explained Matthew Crane, a graduate student who performed the work. "We don't have to show the computer every possible mutant, and that is very powerful. And the computer never gets bored."

While the system was designed to sort C. elegans for a specific research project, Lu believes the machine learning technology ? which is borrowed from computer science ? could be applied to other areas of biology that use model genetic organisms. The system's hardware and software are currently being used in several other laboratories beyond Georgia Tech.

"Our automated technique can be generalized to anything that relies on detecting a morphometric ? or shape, size or brightness difference," Lu said. "We can apply this to anything that can be detected visually, and we think this could be expanded to studying many other problems related to learning, memory, neuro-degeneration and neural developmental diseases that this worm can be used to model."

Individual C. elegans are less than a millimeter long and thinner than a strand of hair, but have 302 neurons with well-defined synapses. While research using single cells can be simpler to do, studies using the worms are good in vivo models for many important processes relevant to human health.

Other researchers who contributed to this paper include student Jeffrey Stirman from Georgia Tech's interdisciplinary program in bioengineering, Professor James Rehg from Georgia Tech's School of Interactive Computing, and three researchers from the Department of Biology at Stanford University's Howard Hughes Medical Institute: Chan-Yen Ou, Peri Kurshan, and Professor Kang Shen.

The autonomous processing facilitated by the new system could allow researchers to examine more animals more rapidly, potentially opening up areas of study that are not feasible today.

"We are hoping that the technology will really change the approach people can take to this kind of research," said Lu. "We expect that this approach will enable people to do much larger scale experiments that can push the science forward beyond looking what individual mutations are doing in a specific situation."
